A History of Mathematics: From Mesopotamia to Modernity

Oxford University Press, USA | ISBN 0198529376 | PDF | 2 Mb | 294 pages

Luke Hodgkin

Book Description:

A History of Mathematics: From Mesopotamia to Modernity/i covers the evolution of mathematics through time and across the major Eastern and Western civilizations. It begins in Babylon, then describes the trials and tribulations of the Greek mathematicians. The important, and often neglected, influence of both Chinese and Islamic mathematics is covered in detail, placing the description of early Western mathematics in a global context. The book concludes with modern mathematics, covering recent developments such as the advent of the computer, chaos theory, topology, mathematical physics, and the solution of Fermat's Last Theorem. Containing more than 100 illustrations and figures, this text, aimed at advanced undergraduates and postgraduates, addresses the methods and challenges associated with studying the history of mathematics. The reader is introduced to the leading figures in the history of mathematics (including Archimedes, Ptolemy, Qin Jiushao, al-Kashi, al-Khwarizmi, Galileo, Newton, Leibniz, Helmholtz, Hilbert, Alan Turing, and Andrew Wiles) and their fields. An extensive bibliography with cross-references to key texts will provide invaluable resource to students and exercises (with solutions) will stretch the more advanced reader.

The Trachtenberg Speed System of Basic Mathematics

The Trachtenberg System is a system of rapid mental calculation, somewhat similar to Vedic mathematics. It was developed by the Ukrainian engineer Jakow Trachtenberg in orderto keep his mind occupied while being held in a Nazi concentrationcamp. The system consists of a number of readily memorized patterns that allow one to perform arithmetic computations very quickly. Simple patterns easily remembered. Teach yourself then teach your children, and any "friends andrelations" who want to give themselves or their family increasedconfidence (in math.) Power Math Free Trachtenberg Mathematics Training Software Does your child "hate" math? I sure did! Then, one day, in a private school I attended as achild, some bright, happy people visited and asked, "Who would like tolearn a super-fast way of doing mathematics?"I don't know why, but I raised my hand immediately. These visitingteachers took some of us to another classroom and taught us theTrachtenberg method. What about your children? There's not much chance of the same intervention happening for them. "Thanks for providing such a great program! Last night I sat downwith my 10 year-old old daughter who is convinced that she can't domath, and watched in amazement as she learned to multiply by 11, 12 and5. She was so excited that when she went to bed last night she wantedto take a copy of the book I have to bed with her so she could readahead. My 7 year old son witnessed what was going on and demanded thatI teach him as well, so he is beginning to learn the "new" systemtoo."--D.J. (6/16/2004) Are the 60-year-old, brain-numbing methods used by schools to teachaddition, multiplication and division making it hard for them to learn mathematics? After I composed the training software offered here for free, the greatgreat grandson of Jakow Trachtenberg downloaded it, tried it, and then contacted me and thanked me for helping keep his ancestor's methodsalive.--Sherman Keene Download the file pow (208,344 Bytes) and getTachetenberg's genius methods for doing the same old math in a brand new way. After practice anyone can perform amazing mathematical feats. This program uses a bullet-proof method that includes full answer checking. Learn the Trachtenberg "way" and then teach it to your child(or children). "Math is the great equalizer." Why not give your offspring a significant edge-- the power to be "great" at math! PowerMath runs on PC in a DOS window. It provides all theinstructions you need to learn the method, and then self-checkingexercises to perform.

Introductory Analysis: A Deeper View of Calculus

Book Description:

Introductory Analysis addresses the needs of students taking a course in analysis after completing a semester or two of calculus, and offers an alternative to texts that assume that math majors are their only audience. By using a conversational style that does not compromise mathematical precision, the author explains the material in terms that help the reader gain a firmer grasp of calculus concepts.

"The author is an extremely good writer. His high level of enthusiasm for the subject matter and intimate knowledge of the subject is echoed throughout...." --Professor Charles Waters, Mankato State University
"This book is an elegant unified presentation of the basic concepts of calculus. The conversational style makes the book very readable, not only for mature students, but also for students who have only taken a basic calculus sequence....Students learn not only how to prove a theorem, they also gain an insight in the nature of a proof." --Professor Jung H. Tsai, SUNY College at Geneseo .

Head First Java, 2nd Edition [ILLUSTRATED]

Product Details * Paperback: 720 pages * Publisher: O'Reilly Media, Inc.; 2 edition * Language: English * ISBN-10: 0596009208 * ISBN-13: 978-0596009205

Book Description :

Learning a complex new language is no easy task especially when it s an object-oriented computer programming language like Java. You might think the problem is your brain. It seems to have a mind of its own, a mind that doesn't always want to take in the dry, technical stuff you're forced to study.

The fact is your brain craves novelty. It's constantly searching, scanning, waiting for something unusual to happen. After all, that's the way it was built to help you stay alive. It takes all the routine, ordinary, dull stuff and filters it to the background so it won't interfere with your brain's real work--recording things that matter. How does your brain know what matters? It's like the creators of the Head First approach say, suppose you're out for a hike and a tiger jumps in front of you, what happens in your brain? Neurons fire. Emotions crank up. Chemicals surge.

That's how your brain knows.

And that's how your brain will learn Java. Head First Java combines puzzles, strong visuals, mysteries, and soul-searching interviews with famous Java objects to engage you in many different ways. It's fast, it's fun, and it's effective. And, despite its playful appearance, Head First Java is serious stuff: a complete introduction to object-oriented programming and Java. You'll learn everything from the fundamentals to advanced topics, including threads, network sockets, and distributed programming with RMI. And the new. second edition focuses on Java 5.0, the latest version of the Java language and development platform. Because Java 5.0 is a major update to the platform, with deep, code-level changes, even more careful study and implementation is required. So learning the Head First way is more important than ever.

If you've read a Head First book, you know what to expect--a visually rich format designed for the way your brain works. If you haven't, you're in for a treat. You'll see why people say it's unlike any other Java book you've ever read.

By exploiting how your brain works, Head First Java compresses the time it takes to learn and retain--complex information. Its unique approach not only shows you what you need to know about Java syntax, it teaches you to think like a Java programmer. If you want to be bored, buy some other book. But if you want to understand Java, this book's for you.

This book explores JavaScript for what it is: a highly expressive and flexible prototype-based object-oriented programming language. Once dismissed as a toy for designers to make things such as rollover buttons, today this interesting and unique language is back, stronger than ever. Today's Web 2.0 world of AJAX, fat-client programming, desktop-like rich Internet applications, drag-and-drop maps and webmail clients, rely heavily on JavaScript to provide a highly interactive user experience. And if we never had the chance to properly explore JavaScript before, now is the time to sit down and (re-)learn it.
This book doesn't assume any prior knowledge of JavaScript and works from the ground up to give you a thorough understanding of the language.

Object-Oriented Programming and Java

Author: Danny Poo, Derek Kiong and Swarnalatha Ashok Paperback: 322 pages Publisher: Springer; 2nd edition (September 27, 2007) Language: English ISBN-10: 1846289629 ISBN-13: 978-1846289620 Format: pdf

Object-Oriented Programming and Java presents two important topics in contemporary software development: object-oriented programming and Java. Data Converters for Wireless Standards

Paperback: 144 pages Format: PDF

Wireless communication is witnessing tremendous growth with proliferation of different standards covering wide, local and personal area networks (WAN, LAN and PAN). The trends call for designs that allow 1) smooth migration to future generations of wireless standards with higher data rates for multimedia applications, 2) convergence of wireless services allowing access to different standards from the same wireless device, 3) inter-continental roaming. This requires designs that work across multiple wireless standards, can easily be reused, achieve maximum hardware share at a minimum power consumption levels particularly for mobile battery-operated devices.
All this calls for higher levels of system integration of both the radio and the digital baseband parts. It also calls for radio design solutions with mixed signal strategies that take full advantage of technology scaledown by moving functions, such as channel select filtering, modulation and demodulation, to the digital domain. Central to achieving these goals is the design of data converters for these emerging standards in the context of technology and market trends.
Data Converters for Wireless Standards presents the design of such converters and introduces the underlying circuit design principles. As such the book will serve as a reference for IC and mixed signal designers, design managers and project leaders in industry, particularly those in the wireless semiconductor industry. The book could also serve as a reference or a text for a first year graduate course on the subject for electrical and/or computer engineering majors.

MIMO System Technology for Wireless Communications

Paperback: 400 pages Data: March 28, 2006 Format: PDF

For broadband communications, it was frequency division multiplexing. For optical communications, it was wavelength division multiplexing. Then, for all types of networks it was code division. Breakthroughs in transmission speed were made possible by these developments, heralding next-generation networks of increasing capability in each case. The basic idea is the same: more channels equals higher throughput. For wireless communications, it is space-time coding using multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) technology. Providing a complete treatment of MIMO under a single cover, MIMO System Technology for Wireless Communications assembles coverage on all aspects of MIMO technology along with up-to-date information on key related issues. Contributors from leading academic and industrial institutions around the world share their expertise and lend the book a global perspective. They lead you gradually from basic to more advanced concepts, from propagation modeling and performance analysis to space-time codes, various systems, implementation options and limitations, practical system development considerations, field trials, and network planning issues. Linking theoretical analysis to practical issues, the book does not limit itself to any specific standardization or research/industrial initiatives. MIMO is the catalyst for the next revolution in wireless systems, and MIMO System Technology for Wireless Communications lays a thorough and complete foundation on which to build the next and future generations of
